Profile:

Etsuji Tomita received his B. Eng. and Dr. Eng. degrees in Electronics Engineering from Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan. Then he was with the faculties of Tokyo Institute of Technology, and was appointed Associate Professor and subsequently Professor at the University of Electro-Communications (UEC Tokyo), Japan. He was also Professor at the Research and Development Initiative, Chuo University, and a part-time lecturer at Hokkaido University and others. He is presently Professor Emeritus at UEC Tokyo and is with the Advanced Algorithms Research Laboratory, UEC Tokyo, He served as the Chair of the department of Information and Communication Engineering, and the founding Head of the Advanced Algorithms Research Laboratory at UEC Tokyo. He was also Research Advisor of Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) ERATO Minato Discrete Structure Manipulation System Project, and was with Tokyo Institute of Technology.

His academic contributions include Editor of IEICE (The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers) and Editor-in-Chief of IPSJ (Information Processing Society of Japan), Local Arrangement Chair of ALT (Algorithmic Learning Theory) 1993, Chair of SIG MPS (Mathematical Modeling and Problem Solving) of IPSJ, Program Committee Chair of ALT 2005, Conference Chair of ICGI (International Colloquium on Grammatical Inference) 2006, Director of IPSJ, Chair of Computer Science Domain of IPSJ, Councilor of JSAI (The Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence), and a judge for Grants-in-Aid for Scientific Research in the Scientific Research Grant Committee of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), and Program Committee Co-Chair of WALCOM (International Workshop on Algorithms and Computation) 2015, and was a Guest Editor of Theoretical Computer Science, Journal of Discrete Algorithms, and Journal of Graph Algorithms and Applications,
He is presently PC member of ICGI 2021 and WALCOM 2022, an editor of ISRN Discrete Mathematics, American Journal of Operations Research, Industrial Engineering and Management, and a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews of American Mathematical Society.

He was given the Yonezawa Award of IECE, the Funai Information Technology Prize, the Contribution Award of SIG MPS of IPSJ, and was awarded Theoretical Computer Science Top Cited Article 2005-2010, Theoretical Computer Science Top Cited Article 2006. He was given the Contribution Award of IPSJ. He is a Fellow of IEICE and IPSJ.
